I was never particularly skilled in sports.  I had a fling with soccer in middle school, and I wasn't half bad at defense.  Well, I guess I was pretty good at bowling at one point, but it did not exactly take a lot of physical activity to bowl...have you ever seen a typical league in Beaver County, PA?  You put a baseball bat in my hand, and I could juice more than A-Rod, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Sammy Sosa, and Mark McGuire combined, and I'd still hit the ball about…

I enjoy watching documentaries. As someone in the fitness field, and looking to coach people into lifestyle changes, I finally got to watch a film, which I had wanted to see for awhile, called Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. It is a documentary by Joe Cross, an Australian businessman who was 100 pounds overweight. He decides to embark on a 60 day journey in the United States, using only his Breville Juicer, consuming nothing but fruits and vegetables. Joe also wanted to be completely off the pills he had to…

You've heard it before...eating healthy is expensive! Well, of course it can be! But, it doesn't have to be. If you shop smart, know where to go, and what to buy, it can be quite economical.  You may become thin, but your wallet won't.  Take a wild guess at what these four items cost in the picture?   Hint...it's less than a typical fast food "value" meal. Sure, each item may cost more than five servings of ramen noodles, but eating ramen noodles on a daily basis will cost you…

This is an article I wrote back in March, 2013. It was endorsed by Xlear, the company who makes Spry gum. They appreciated the article and posted it on their social media pages. -Matt   If you know me personally, then you know I love to chew gum. I've been chewing gum ever since I got my braces off (even occasionally when I had them on...sorry, Mom). Unfortunately, while there were many varieties of gum I chewed and enjoyed, all of them had one thing in common. If they did not have…

CASS Fitness will also be posting blogs on a regular basis. I have also been a writer for several years, so I will take those skills, along with information I feel you will find useful for your workouts, your goals, and for your health to give you professional insight! In addition, I have roots in music, so I will be posting motivational playlists on a regular basis. I'll combine the lists with songs from artists most of you know to the independent artists you may not know. This is another…

As you push for that extra rep on the bench press, an extra pull-up, a kick in for that last quarter mile of your run, or that extra 30 seconds in your plank, the proper motivation from a CASS Fitness personal trainer, along with some great music can make what you may have thought to be impossible turn into your latest accomplishment.   This is my playlist from 11/19/2013   1.) Eminem - "Survival" 2.) A$AP Ferg - "Lord" ft. Bone Thugs-n-Harmony 3.) Pearl Jam - "Mind Your Manners" 4.)…

The name of this workout is pretty self-explanatory. The CASS Fitness "Workout From Hell" Circuit is a creation developed by myself and Ramon. It is influenced by our mentors in personal training, as well as Ramon's amateur wrestling background, and my love for pull-ups, dips, and planks. It is not easy, but it is rewarding once you finish the circuit. It is not for the beginning client, but it something you can strive to accomplish, and we will help you through every step. You can increase the difficulty by adding reps…

This article is targeted to long distance runners.  As you may know, I am no stranger to long distance running myself. I ran cross-country and long distance events in track.  I was skinny as a rail, but I was on the larger side for a cross-country runner.  (I think all those push-ups I did in high school when my coach caught me swearing helped out a bit!)  I always did more than just run, even though I did not become dedicated to strength training until I stopped competing in long…

This is a weight loss journey from April Kinzler, a lady I went to high school with.  Her journey from 235 lbs. down to 136 lbs. was quite a roller coaster ride.  The beginning of the journey was very tough for April.  However, she surrounded herself with positive people, including a supportive future husband, and she was determined to meet her goal WITHOUT EXCUSES, even as a busy woman with a full time job and two kids.  I asked April to write about her weight loss journey a few days…

Hopefully, you got to see the inaugural list last week! If not, here it is: http://cassfitness.net/matts-workout-playlist-11192013/   This is motivational music, and as you saw on last week's list, I featured music from famous artists, along with music from independent artists. That will be a continuing theme. As somebody who has worked in music before, I know how important it is for independent artists to get as much exposure as possible. When you are pushing for the last rep, music can make all the difference, well, maybe except for today…
